The film adaptation of The Color Purple (2023) is based on the Broadway musical by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, Stephen Bray and Marsha Norman, which in turn is based on Alice Walker’s best-selling novel. Although it’s still in theaters, the film is now available to watch from home.

Directed by Blitz Bazawule, The Color Purple (2023) follows Celie (Fantasia Barrino, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi), a young woman who faces many hardships in life, including being torn apart from her children and an abusive husband (Colman Domingo), in Georgia in the early 20th century. However, with the support of Shug (Taraji P. Henson), a sultry jazz singer, and Sofia (Danielle Brooks), her stepdaughter, Celie finds strength to survive through sisterhood.
The film also stars Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Jon Batiste, Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Deon Cole, Tamela Mann and others.
