With haute couture week in Paris concluded, the spotlight of the fashion world shifted en masse to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the village perched on the Maritime Alps in southern France. Simon Porte Jacquemus chose it as the location to present his new collection for 2024 in the Maeght Foundation, a few kilometers from Nice, calling together his high-profile friends Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, model (and girlfriend, reportedly, of Leonardo DiCaprio) Vittoria Ceretti and Deva Cassel (daughter of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel) who paraded on a platform set up among the works of Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder and Alberto Giacometti.
Not surprisingly, the collection of 47 looks, both women and men’s, was given the name “Les Sculptures” by the French designer (who himself grew up in the south of France, in the town of Mallemort, not far from Marseille). The presentation showcased leather dresses with rounded shoulders and sleeves curving outward and models boasting fluffy hair with wavy or curly styles. The colors? White, red and cream. Considerable attention was given to the accessories such as the Le Petit Calino mini bag and Les Lunettes Ovalo sunglasses.
Jacquemus, the golden boy of French fashion, chose Kristin Davis, the iconic Charlotte York from Sex and the City, to announce the fashion show on social media with a teaser that immediately went viral. In the video, Carrie Bradshaw’s BFF is seen receiving a cream-colored box with the brand’s name on it, and, after slipping on a pair of immaculate white gloves, she discovers that she has received a gray V-neck pullover as a gift from the brand. Having noticed a few too many folds, she personally irons it delicately, caresses it and scrutinizes every detail, before placing it elegantly over her shoulders because, as the voiceover points out, the product is not just a simple sweater, but rather “a sweater to put on your shoulders.”
In the acclaimed art gallery in the south of France, the unprecedented collaboration between Jacquemus and the historic footwear brand Repetto (much loved by Brigitte Bardot) was also presented, redesigning the legendary “Zizi” model, famously worn by the singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and first conceived by the legendary shoe designer Rose Repetto, who created her first ballerinas in 1947. Her modern reinterpretation of the classic ballet shoe was invented for her son, choreographer and dancer Roland Petit.
Admiring the designer’s “Les Sculptures” looks from the front row were a phalanx of stars including Davis, Julia Roberts, Jack Harlow, PinkPantheress, Elite actor Aron Piper, Grown-ish’s Luka Sabbat, editor Edward Enninful, model Bianca Balti and Kylie Jenner with her daughter, Stormi (who also made the scene together in Paris a few days earlier at the Valentino couture show.)
