With Filmart nearing its close, it’s likely some of the attendees will have a few days to explore Hong Kong, and the one thing to do, above all else, is to discover the city’s world-class food scene.

It’s been a few years since The Hollywood Reporter last offered our picks of the best Hong Kong restaurants for Filmart execs to sample, but the pandemic is in the past and the city is back and open for business.

Despite its recent challenges, Hong Kong remains a foodie’s paradise, with local and international cuisine to suit every budget. Here’s five Hong Kong restaurants to try right now, including an institution that has had a recent refurbishment, a restaurant with perhaps the best views anywhere in Asia, an eatery housed within a hub for creatives, a taste of Britain inside a repurposed colonial gem and a Michelin approved Cantonese food experience.

Ho Lee Fook

Ho Lee Fook, a Hong Kong culinary landmark, recently got a facelift, so gone is the dim lighting and slightly claustrophobic feel and in comes something lighter, brighter and a bit more roomy. The food is still as great as ever and the reason this Black Sheep establishment has maintained its international reputation. The menu features fusion cuisine, so look for clever takes on traditional local dishes like pork char siu. A great place for foodies but also big groups.

Popinjays

Rooftops! Rooftops! Rooftops! If you’re spending time in a city with the greatest skyline in the world (sorry, New York) you have to sample as many of the best rooftop bars and restaurants as possible and one of the best views in Hong Kong can be found at Popinjays. The main restaurant of The Murray Hotel, Popinjays offers contemporary cuisine, which is all fine and dandy, but you’re coming here for the pre- and post-dinner cocktails in the best possible setting.

Club Cecconi’s

Situated on the 28th floor of Soho House Hong Kong is Club Cecconi’s, a more compact version of the private members club’s famed Italian restaurant offshoot. Boasting views of Victoria Harbour on one side, and the forest of high-rises of Sheung Wan district on the other (a memorable site at night), Club Cecconi’s offers traditional Italian fare, such as fried calamari, cacio e pepe and veal Milanese. Expect the usual Soho House polish, great service and excellent wine list, but be warned it can get pricey quickly after a few glasses.

Magistracy Dining Room

The second Black Sheep restaurant to make our list is Central’s Magistracy Dining Room. Located within the Tai Kwun development — a must-see on any trip to Hong Kong — the restaurant is housed within the former Central Magistracy building, a colonial era gem that has been artfully repurposed but maintains the grandeur and opulence of a forgotten time. The food offered by executive chef Matthew Kirkley is also distinctly British, so the menu features dover sole, lobster, chicken and mushroom pie and aged prime rib. The restaurant’s terrace, dubbed the Botanical Gardens, is a lovely addition where patrons can enjoy drinks, including an impressively wide range of gins.

Rùn

If you’re looking for that take-home memorable local food experience, then it’s worth checking out Rùn. Housed inside the St. Regis Hotel, Rùn boasts two Michelin stars for its menu of Cantonese classic dishes made from seasonal ingredients prepared in the traditional way but presented in a thoroughly modern pavilion-like setting. Rùn is not a cheap night out by any measure, but the food and the ambience will leave a lasting impression.
