Some social media users on X have come for the red and yellow backdrop at Vanity Fair‘s 2024 Oscar Party, complaining that the colors remind them of the McDonald’s fast-food chain.

Scores of stars walked the carpet at the magazine’s Academy Awards after-party, one of the most exclusive invites in Hollywood, from Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Sofia Vergara to Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.

But instead of more restrained color palettes seen in recent years, including 2023’s blue-and-silver combo, this year’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party featured much more blaring hues that share the colors of McDonald’s fries packaging.

“It looks like a big McDonald’s,” wrote X user @kenobisms.

Agreed @Tthasage, “Why did Vanity fair after party choose this red carpet set up. It’s so ugly reminds me of McDonalds and clashes with the clothes.”

Added another user on X, “why does vanity fair after party carpet looks like mcdonald’s??? i’m crying what happened.”

The reaction to Vanity Fair’s Oscars Party backdrop follows criticism that erupted during and after the 2023 Emmy Awards in January. Chrissy Teigen in an Instagram story wrote that she was “begging award shows to have better looking step and repeats” and many social media users posted that the large lettering saying Emmys and Fox was distracting and clashed with stars’ outfits.

It’s hard to keep everyone happy when it comes to color choices for awards show carpets and red carpets. At last year’s Oscars, organizers opted to do something different, going with a pale beige “champagne” colored carpet. Not everyone was pleased especially if, like Jamie Lee Curtis, they were wearing beige dresses that were destined to get lost in the color scheme. Curtis tweeted a day ahead of the telecast that “their carpet is going to match my drapes.”

THR has reached out to Vanity Fair for comment on the choice of this year’s backdrop colors for the its Oscar Party.
