Peaky Blinders actor Kingsley Ben-Adir dons dreadlocks and speaks in a Jamaican patois to play a reggae legend in the latest trailer for Bob Marley: One Love, which dropped Tuesday.
The biopic has Marley overcoming adversity, including a failed assassination attempt, to rise to musical fame with a message of love and unity in dangerous times. “There’s a war going on. How I can bring peace? I can’t even get peace for myself,” a fretting Marley says at one point in the trailer.
The movie, based on real events, recounts a failed attempt to murder Marley in his home in Kingston, Jamaica, which only drove the reggae legend to double down on his mission to unify a divided nation with revolutionary music.
Produced in partnership with the Marley family, Bob Marley: One Love also stars Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, the wife of the music superstar. “Sometimes the messenger has to become the message,” she tells Marley as he gets back on the concert stage to unify a nation.
And Bob Marley: One Love co-stars James Norton as record producer Chris Blackwell, while Jesse Cilio, Michael Gandolfini, Nadine Marshall and Anthony Welsh help round out the ensemble cast for the film from Plan B Entertainment, State Street Pictures and Tuff Gong Pictures Production.
The biopic has the backing of the music legend’s estate, with Richard Hewitt, Orly Marley and Matt Solodky serving as executive producers, along with Brad Pitt. Also involved in the film is Marley’s widow, Rita Marley, and children Cedella Marley and Ziggy Marley, all three of whom are producers on the project.
Robert Teitel, Dede Garner and Jeremy Kleiner also produce the film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, based on a script he wrote with Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers and Zach Baylin, and based on a story by Winter and Flowers.
Bob Marley: One Love will hit theaters on Feb. 14, 2024.
